The Astrolite by Hasbro allowed one to build cities of light. A tremendous number of clear plastic parts were lit up using a light bulb with a color wheel that one could turn for effect. The bottom picture is set up as the robot and shows all the spare parts. My set is nearly complete missing only a few of the medium sized straight rods. Very cool. Item number 5495 dated 1969.
The most popular toy ever to use plastic pieces lit up by a bulb would be
Lite-Brite, also by Hasbro.
